Tuesday, March 5th, Christine will read from When a Woman Rises at EXO Roast Café, 403 N. 6th Ave. in Tucson, Arizona. The reading will be from 4:30-5:15.
Textiles from weaving co-ops in Chiapas, Mexico will be for sale before and after the reading – from 4-4:30 and again from 5:15-6 pm. My friend Gail Ryser who helped set up this reading is making her famous wheat-free lemon polenta cakes for the event. Coffee and tea will also be available for purchase in the café.

Saturday April 6th tentatively 5 pm). Bill Jungels, director of “Maya Faces in a Smoking Mirror,” will join Christine in Denver to show the film at the Xicanindie Film Festival at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center. The XicanIndie Film Fest is an annual festival that showcases the best in Chicano independent film as well as featured Latino World Cinema.

“Maya Faces in a Smoking Mirror,” a documentary co-produced by Bill Jungels and Christine Eber will be shown in Anapra, Juárez on Saturday, July 14th from 10 am – 12 noon at PARROQUIA DE CORPUS CHRISTI ANAPRA, Cangrejo 10723, Puerto de Anapra, 32107 Ciudad Juárez. Christine, Sarah Murphy, and Sally Meisenhelder from Weaving for Justice, will be at the event to answer questions and to show weavings from Maya co-ops in Chiapas.

March 8th, 1:30 International Women’s Day, “Maya Faces in a Smoking Mirror” will be shown as part of the Las Cruces International Film Festival at the Cineport 10 Theatres in the Mesilla Valley Mall, Las Cruces. Christine Eber, co-producer and member of Weaving for Justice, will be present for a Q&A after the film.

Furthering Educational Opportunities for Mayas in Chiapas, Belize and Guatemala
Christine Eber and Laura McClusky
Christine Eber and Laura McClusky will discuss the efforts of educated Mayas in Belize and Chiapas to create educational opportunities for Maya children and youth and the many obstacles to schooling, such as finances and racism. Laura will focus on Belize, Christine on Chiapas. They will also provide an historical perspective on education, Laura by comparing experiences of students in Belize with those of their teachers and mentors; Christine by reading excerpts from her forthcoming novel about women in Chiapas, When a Woman Rises. Both are anthropologists and current and past board members of the Maya Educational Foundation (MEF) which provides scholarship support to programs in Belize, Chiapas, and Guatemala.
